"Bullseye Reef Lobster"

The Bullseye Reef Lobster (Hoplometopus holthuisi) is relatively common on the Kona/Kohala coast, although it is rare in the rest of Hawaii. This small nocturnal lobster (5 inches at most) hides in crevices and caves, almost never coming out during the day.

This lobster was photographed on a night dive inside a lava tube off the Kohala Coast in front of the Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii. We were in about 35 ft of water.

Photographed with a Nikon N90s in a Sea&Sea NX90 housing with two Ikelite 200 strobes. Nikon 60mm f2.8 macro lens. Fuji Provia 100F transparency film scanned with a Nikon LS-2000.
