"Commerson's Frogfish"

Well camouflaged by their shape, Commersons Frogfishes (Antennarius commerson)have been found in a wide range of colors: yellow, red, orange, gray, green, black. They have been known to change color over a period of several weeks, to match a new background. A frogfish can engulf a fish as big as itself.

This frogfish was perched on a coral head very close to our dive mooring in about 35 feet of water off the south Kohala Coast near the Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Photographed with a Nikon N90s in a Sea&Sea NX90 housing with two Ikelite 200 strobes. Nikon 60mm f2.8 macro lens. Fuji Provia 100F transparency film scanned with a Nikon LS-2000.
