"Hawaiian Night Octopus"

The Hawaiian Night Octopus (Octopus ornatus) hides during the day and emerges only at dusk. Like all octopuses, it can bite when provoked; its venom causes joint aches. Octopuses are known for their remarkable abilities as escape artists. They can eject an ink cloud, change color and texture in an instant, and fit themselves into tiny holes in the reef.

This octopus was photographed at night in about 35ft of water off the Kohala Coast near the Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Photographed with a Nikon N90s in a Sea&Sea NX90 housing with two Ikelite 200 strobes, Nikon 60mm f2.8 macro lens. Fuji Provia 100F transparency film scanned with a Nikon LS-2000.
