Western Serengeti
Kirawira Tented Camp

August 27-29

Although this is called a tented camp, the rooms were built on stone foundations and had very nice tile and wood bathrooms in each unit.

This was my favorite lodge of all the places we stayed in Africa. It was not quite as luxurious as Ngorongoro Crater Lodge but it had a lot of things going for it. It was a little less formal, which I found more comfortable. It was cool and comfortable at night without being too cold. The rooms were very pleasant with a nice covered deck looking out toward Lake Victoria. It had a nice pool to cool off in after game drives. And it had what I thought was the best food of the trip.
Each tent is built on a stone foundation with a wood floor. A nice wood deck in front of the tent provides a nice place to relax, read a book, or just stare at the beautiful view.

The tent has screens almost all the way around which can be opened up to provide a very pleasant breeze.

The rooms are furnished with a king size four- poster bed which has redundant mosquito netting. There were hardly any bugs at the lodge anyway.

The room also has a nice desk, wardrobe cabinet, and shelf space for putting bags. In the back of the room is the bathroom which had one of the nicest showers of any of the lodges we stayed at - lots of pressure and plenty of hot water.

Kirawira had a lovely lounge area with comfortable furniture. Most of our group spent the afternoons here while I was on game drives. They had a nice selection of books about the area, as well as a few games.
The dining tent was also very nice - the open air feel to it was lovely. In the shade, the temperature was comfortable for all three meals of the day. We always had a nice selection of foods and were presented with a five or six course meal for dinner. This was some of the best food we had on the trip. They even made home made ice cream for deserts which was truly excellent.
Kirawira also has a nice pool which was a great way to cool off before lunch after the morning game drive. In the late afternoon, for about an hour, there seemed to be a lot of bees around the pool - probably looking for water. Other times of the day were fine, though.
