"Peacock Grouper"

The Peacock Grouper (Cephalopholis argus) was introduced to Hawaii in 1956. Growing up to two feet long, it has displaced other fish from reefs, as well as eating young fish of some species. Unfortunately, it is not particularly good to eat, as some large Peacock Groupers have carried ciguatera (a nasty illness caused by algal toxins).

This grouper was photographed in about 35 feet of water off the south Kohala Coast near the Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Photographed with a Nikon N90s in a Sea&Sea NX90 housing with two Ikelite 200 strobes. Nikon 60mm f2.8 macro lens. Fuji Provia 100F transparency film scanned with a Nikon LS-2000.
