"Regal Slipper Lobster"

This lobster (Arctides regal) was named for a Honolulu shell collector, Mary Eleanore King, in 1963. She sponsored many scientific expeditions in her boat Pele. Hawaii’s lobsters are commonly nocturnal, hiding in crevices during the day and coming out in search of food during the night.

This lobster was photographed at night in a lava tube in about 35 feet of water off the south Kohala Coast near the Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Photographed with a Nikon N90s in a Sea&Sea NX90 housing with two Ikelite 200 strobes. Nikon 60mm f2.8 macro lens. Fuji Provia 100F transparency film scanned with a Nikon LS-2000.
