"Devil Scorpionfish" |
This well-camouflaged Devil Scorpionfish (Scorpaenopsis diabolus) was resting quietly on the bottom. While I prepared to photograph it, it opened its mouth briefly. I waited about five minutes for it to open its mouth again. The flash of yellow around its mouth was quite startling! Scorpionfish have poisonous spines in their dorsal fins and can be quite dangerous if stepped on. This one was photographed in about 35 feet of water right near our dive mooring off the south Kohala Coast near Puako Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii. Photographed with a Nikon N90s in a Sea&Sea NX90 housing with two Ikelite 200 strobes. Nikon 60mm f2.8 macro lens. Fuji Provia 100F transparency film scanned with a Nikon LS-2000. |
