"Eagle Ray #1" |
The
Spotted Eagle Ray (Aetobatus narinari) is usually found by
itself, although occasionally it swims in small groups. Baby eagle rays
(called pups) are born alive and are seven to fourteen inches
long. The eagle rays two-to-six barbs are found at the base of the
tail and are venomous. Shy animals who avoid divers, their barbs are
most dangerous if stepped on.
This photo was taken in about 45 ft of water near Puako Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii. Photographed with a Nikon N90s in a Sea&Sea NX90 housing with two Ikelite 200 strobes. Nikon 60mm f2.8 macro lens. Fuji Provia 100F transparency film scanned with a Nikon LS-2000. |
