"Trumpetfish" |
The Trumpetfish (Aulostomus chinensis) can be almost a yard long. They cruise the reef slowly in search of food (small fishes), then move in fast when they spot it; they can suck in small fishes as large around as their own body. Trumpetfishes can change their color at will to blend in, and they have been seen using a school of yellow tangs as camouflage or using a turtle or SCUBA diver as a blind! This one was photographed under a lava ledge in about 35 feet of water off the south Kohala Coast near Puako Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii. Photographed with a Nikon N90s in a Sea&Sea NX90 housing with two Ikelite 200 strobes. Nikon 60mm f2.8 macro lens. Fuji Provia 100F transparency film scanned with a Nikon LS-2000. |
